Caring for your Cashmere!

Nothing can feel more luxurious against your skin than cashmere. Its fine texture is not only sumptuously soft but also strong and provides excellent insulation.  Many people admit to being frightened of buying cashmere garments due to their delicate nature when it comes to cleaning. Some would advise that cashmere should be dry clean only; however, this is not always true. Cashmere is actually best when hand washed if you stick to a few simple rules.

Firstly, use cool water and a mild soap such as baby shampoo or a wool specific fabric wash. Gently rub the soap into the garment in the cool water. When rinsing the cashmere, you may wish you use a little hair conditioner acting as a fabric softener. Once rinsed, gently press some of the excess water from the garment, but do not twist or wring the cashmere; this will result in wrinkling as well as cause damage to the fibres and can lead to severe loss of shape. Instead, lay the cashmere flat on a towel and leave to air dry. It is important to avoid hanging damp cashmere as this too can cause loss of shape.  If there are a few minor wrinkles that you wish to eradicate, lay another towel on top of the item and give it a light press with a cool iron.
